If You Think of Travel as an Investment, Don’t Miss This Important Piece of Advice

By Paula Burke

My name is Paula, and I have the best job in the world.  For the past 20 years, I’ve worked at Road Scholar. I manage our phone center, and I get to speak with people every day who are fulfilling their dreams to discover the world. They have even inspired me to go on my own learning adventures. I’ve been a participant on many Road Scholar programs.

Working here and being a participant for all these years, I’ve learned a lot and I want to pass along one important piece of advice to you now.

Like many people, when I enroll in a Road Scholar program, I think of my upcoming trip as an investment. And for many of the things that have financial value in my life, I like to protect those investments with insurance. That’s why as soon as I enroll in a program — I purchase Road Scholar’s Trip Protection Plan.

Over the years, I’ve heard from many participants who never thought something could happen to them, and they chose not to protect their investment. When the unthinkable did happen, they were devastated to learn they would have to forfeit, in some cases, thousands of dollars in what was meant to be the experience of a lifetime.

I have also heard from many participants who say that purchasing trip protection was the best thing they did. When they suddenly had to cancel their program, they were relieved to get their money back. Even though my husband and I are in good health, we know the unexpected can happen. The peace of mind we get from purchasing the Road Scholar trip protection plan is worth every penny.

Not only does the plan reimburse you for the cost of your program if you need to cancel, it also covers the cost of your airfare. The Road Scholar plan includes “cancel for any reason” coverage, which means just what it says — you can cancel for any reason and Road Scholar will give you a credit good for the full amount of your program. It is an extraordinary value.

Like any type of insurance, I hope you never have to use it, but on the occasion that you do, I know you’ll be relieved to know you purchased it.

  • I am very disappointed that Road Scholar is not doing a better job of providing travel insurance options for people who take their trips.  All the articles I read say to avoid "cancellation for any reason" policies as that inflates the price.  I am only going to cancel for a medical emergency (not to go to a graduation for example) and should not have to pay for cancellation for any reason.  I find it hard to believe that I am the only person who does not want the cancel for any reason policy. Yes, I can look elsewhere on my own, but I think Road Scholar could do a better job helping me by offering a couple of policy options.  When I call the travel insurance company Road Scholar is affiliated with, they cannot offer any other options but cancel for any reason.  The travel insurance  has gotten more and more expensive, and I think it is because only the most expensive option is offered.
