I’ve dedicated my life to Road Scholar’s not-for-profit mission, which has changed society’s concepts of aging and older adult’s perspectives on learning throughout life.  When Road Scholar was founded back in 1975, the idea that older adults would engage in learning activities was virtually unheard of.  Today, it’s taken for granted that older adults are vital, engaged and love to learn and enrich their minds through every phase of life.  It’s true, and we’ve come a long way.

Today, as president and CEO of Road Scholar, it often surprises me that some people don’t know Road Scholar is a not-for-profit educational organization. And, like any college or university, we rely on the contributions of our participants, alumni, friends and supporters.

This #GivingTuesday please consider giving to support Road Scholar — especially if you believe in education, cultural understanding and providing opportunities for older adults to learn and expand their horizons among new friends. We are a university of the world for older adults, and our mission is to open minds to new ideas, different people, places, cultures, history and environments. Like all not-for-profit colleges and universities, we ask those who benefit from our services and those who believe in our mission to support us.

#GivingTuesday takes place on Nov. 29th and is an event that organizes and promotes the philanthropic efforts of more than 30,000 organizations worldwide. The day is designed to kick off the charitable season and also stands in sharp contrast to the flurry of consumerism that “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” have come to represent.

Road Scholars know the value of spending money on experiences rather than “things.”

At this very moment, more than 2,000 older adults are participating in life-changing Road Scholar learning adventures. Folks like Josephine from Detroit, who recently wrote: I am so very appreciative to Road Scholar for the opportunities that enhance, enlighten and expand our understanding and broaden our horizons — in a very safe and diverse environment.”

Josephine’s positive experiences — learning, expanding her circle of friends, and exploring the world in comfort and safety — are echoed by thousands of other lifelong learners who participate in our programs.

This #GivingTuesday, your tax-deductible gift helps us:

  • Provide Road Scholar Caregiver Grants, so those whose lives are devoted to caring for a loved one can find respite and enjoy a rejuvenating experience.
  • Fund more than $100,000 in scholarships annually. Adults who lack the financial resources to participate can experience life-changing educational adventures with Road Scholar.
  • Create engaging programs that adapt to the educational needs and enrich the lives of our participants. We depend on contributions from our friends to cover the gap between tuition fees and the actual cost of running programs — just as a college or university seeks support from its alumni and friends.
  • Hire the best instructors and sustain the educational focus of our programs. Donations to Road Scholar support educational excellence.
  • Reach new audiences of adults — often older, single or widowed — who benefit from the camaraderie and deep impact our learning experiences create.

Keep an eye out for a new video we’ll be debuting on our Facebook page on #GivingTuesday, this Nov. 29th. We thank you for considering Road Scholar in your charitable giving. Your gift to Road Scholar is an investment in learning and in the well-being of thousands of older adults who depend on our learning experiences every year.
