A long time ago (20+ years) I was stationed in Germany with the United States Air Force. Christmas in Germany is one of those really special times of year there. I will say, however, that the degree and form of celebration is different depending on what part of the country you are in (much like in the US!). My experience was in the Rheinland-Pfalz state and it was a lot of fun with the Christmas Markets in practically every town square. There are special muddled wines available, special foods, and a general air of cheer. I really enjoyed seeing how another culture celebrates the holiday. New Year's Eve was something to behold, also, as all the church bells ring at midnight and fireworks are going off everywhere. You couldn't sleep through it, so you may as well stay up and welcome in the New Year.
