Should I really go to India?

I am almost finished reading the RS list of suggested books on India. I've had a life long dream to take this trip, but after reading the books I realize that it is a new India. I long to see the sites, smell the many flowers, trees, spices, and enjoy the people and villages I learned about growing up, but all the books I've read focus on a modern India in transition, with crowded, traffic laden, environmentally challenged streets columned by large buildings and tech activity, even in many villages. It almost seems as though I've waited too late and the India of my dreams may no longer exist. I'm sure RS 's program avoids the more unpleasant aspects of any trip, but I am getting wet feet. Your comments are most welcome.

Yes, India can be a challenge. It's been a few years (7) since I've been there. If you can adjust your expectations to the reality, you will enjoy it. My expectations were that India would be noisy, crowded, and inconvenient. That resulted in me having no culture shock at all. The city traffic did rise to the level of chaos, which can only be experienced. But sometimes the noise was that of the 4AM chanting from a temple by the hotel or the early Muslim call to prayer. The crowds included teenagers who wanted to practice their English with you and families that (for some reason) want to have their picture taken with you (we never did figure that out!). But there is no way that any tour will be able to avoid unpleasant situations. For the most part, it's an incredibly poor country and that poverty is very visible.

Yes, go to India because it is one of the more interesting places to visit. I think of it as a country half in the 21st Century and half in the 15th Century. Cows wander trash-filled alleys that lead to classrooms where students learn complex computer coding ... our guide referred to traffic, smog and the flurry of activity as "the organized chaos of India." Don;t know if they are on your reading list, but you might enjoy books by Tarquin Hall, whose New Delhi "most private investigator" Vish Puri solves crimes in an entertaining way.

Of course you should got to India. If you don't like big crowded cities then take the Road Scholar trip "Teaching English in India's Princely State of Rajasthan". It is a wonderful program where you see the major sites in Dehli and Agra, but you spend most of your time with the children in the villages of Kalwar and Mundota. They are welcoming and eager to learn and you don't have to be an experienced teacher to help them.
