Should I really go to India?

I am almost finished reading the RS list of suggested books on India. I've had a life long dream to take this trip, but after reading the books I realize that it is a new India. I long to see the sites, smell the many flowers, trees, spices, and enjoy the people and villages I learned about growing up, but all the books I've read focus on a modern India in transition, with crowded, traffic laden, environmentally challenged streets columned by large buildings and tech activity, even in many villages. It almost seems as though I've waited too late and the India of my dreams may no longer exist. I'm sure RS 's program avoids the more unpleasant aspects of any trip, but I am getting wet feet. Your comments are most welcome.
