March 2...... Italy coronavirus update

PATBROOKS69091345

I just called Road Scholar and after a 15 minute wait talked with a very rude operator

I explained that It was the second update within a week from the CDC, NOW, etc after separate cases were confirmed in Tuscany and Sicily. “Sustained community spread” of the coronavirus was cited for this new alert.

She said the March 22 Sicily trip was not canceled and was not considered affected by the virus. At the end of the conversation she said "Enjoy your trip"

You might try calling back. I just got off the phone with them and my Amalfi Coast trip was cancelled for 3/10. Whew! I had a short wait on the phone, a brief conversation with a very nice young lady who got my information and said a supervisor would call me back by the end of the day. He called less than 5 minutes later and had just gotten out of a meeting where it was decided to cancel my trip. So again, the landscape may have changed since you called. Good luck and let us know.

bblfraser040253 Thank you so much for this information. Glad to hear it. Looks like they will wait till last minute since your trip was 3/10. My trip to Sicily is 3/22. Certainly makes it stressful for a lot of us. I will take your advice and call again. Many thanks

When you call, if you don't get satisfaction from the low level phone agent, do ask to be bumped up to a Supervisor or Manager.

Guess what. You were right. Got a nice guy named Charlie and he said all March trips to Italy were just canceled.
The following in what's posted on their website...........Italy:
Due to State Department recommendations to avoid non-essential travel to Italy, we are canceling our programs in Italy through March 2020. We are contacting all participants enrolled in these programs and will provide full refunds or transfer those who wish to another program. Thank you Road Scholar. Now we get all our $$$ back

We are sorry that you had a poor experience on the phone. As you might imagine, the phones have been ringing off the hook and although that is no excuse for a curse response, it has been a challenging few weeks. The current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation is evolving daily. The safety and well-being of our participants is our top concern. Please see our website for daily updates regarding the coronavirus. Again, our apologies for your poor experience.

Funny though, in my family, Sicily is not Italy! They surely didn't specify Sicily when they posted all travel to Italy is canceled thru March.

If it makes you feel any better, The World Atlas website identifies Sicily as an autonomous region of Italy, under the Italian government. I'm sure it was included in the cancellations especially since it is one of the locations of an outbreak.
