For anyone considering a Tanzania tour here are our observations from our participation in Tanzania program of July 2017:
Late-July is the dry season. In preparation for the trip we took various insect protection measures yet we encountered only 2 or 3 mosquitos the entire time. Long sleeved shirts are good protection from the sun but not essential as bug protection at this time of year.Weather is typically cool (55F/ 13C) and cloudy in mornings and warm (not hot) and sunny in the afternoons.
Much travel is on washboard, dirt roads producing vibration and noise - locals call it the 'African massage.' That could be an issue for people with back problems. It also takes a toll on vehicles and can cause malfunctions of equipment such as inoperative windshield wipers, seat belts, and door mechanisms. Passing vehicles generate clouds of dust, which can be coped with by opening/closing windows. Very few people resorted to wearing dust masks but consider bringing one if you have respiratory issues.
As the brochure says, at sites using generators electricity availability is limited. Availability is scheduled so that was not a problem. More significant is the use of low wattage lighting. If you plan to read in the evenings bring a headlamp or booklight.
Internet access is problematic. Don't count on it being reliable even where the brochure says that wifi is supposedly offered.
Mobile tent sites are a big step up from camping. They include queen sized beds, flush toilets, and hot showers (with limited water quantity) Even at the tent sites, meals consisted of a selection of local items well seasoned and prepared by chefs.
There are lots of animals. We got to see dozens of species, with many being very close. After making initial sightings it is great to watch behavior - how the animals relate to others of their own kind and to the other species around them. The jeeps have raise-able roofs to offer unimpeded viewing. Bring binoculars!
Guides were native Tanzanians: knowledgeable, skilled, professional, and helpful. We had a great time. We hope you will too.
