Cairo, Egypt and airport experiences

I will be going on my first Egyptian adventure in the next few months and traveling to Cairo alone (I am female) and I was wondering if there were difficulties at the airport in getting a travel visa and transportation to the hotel.

We just got back this week. It was an awesome trip.

Good to know! I am going October 24. Very excited! Any problem with tipping with $1 bills?

I'll preface my remark by saying I've not been to Egypt but why would you tip someone in what to them is a foreign currency? They'll lose money by having to convert it to Egyptian Pounds.

All expenses and tips are included in the program fee. For example, at regular restroom stops, the Egyptian tour guide tipped the individual standing outside the water closet asking for money and selling toilet paper. (Take your own tissues and hand sanitizers.) If someone still tried to stop us, he would say something in Egyptian Arabic and they would back off. That said, you can tip if you wish. We did not go anyplace that didn's take American dollars. They were thrilled to have them. It seemed like standard operating procedure. The hotels had currency change machines and most people kept a small amount for EPon hand. Often the vendors would sell back their American dollars to a tourist--20 $1.00 for a twenty dollar bill. The guide will tell you if you may want to give an optional tip (and more importantly, when to tip). The carriage and camel rides were paid for including a tip by RS. He instructed us that we mght want to give an additional tip, but NOT until the trip back.

I have read that they like $1 bills on another site. Just saying
  • In reply to rockystonecat53051544:

Of course they'll take $1 bills: they want to make a sale of any kind. But where are they going to spend those dollars? Banks won't take such small denominations in foreign currency. I think it's impolite to offer $1 bills, when Egyptian currency is readily available to tourists from ATM machines. How would you like it if foreign visitors came here and wanted to spend their local currency in our store? Especially in small denominations? Rude.

Hi, I’ve heard of paying for the bathroom but not toliet paper. Do you really need to pay for it? No problem I will pay for it, it’s just..I’ve never heard of that. But I’ve never seen the Pyramids either. LOL, How much is it to buy a wad each time? I’m not going to buy a roll and drag it around town with me, lol.
  • I just returned from Egypt RS trip. We were met at airport by Zach of Cosmos travel who work with RS. Accompanied thru airport and Visa line. No problems. Escorted to hotel. Same on leaving Egypt. Escorted to first security line. I felt safe the entire time I was in Egypt with RS. Egypt visit a great experience!

I would take plenty of one dollar bills. They wanted them more than Egyptian money. I totally agree about the vendors and feeling like you are rude. I I kept saying no thanks and kept my hands where they couldn't put anything into them.

Hi Elena. My name is Vivian.  I'm reading this thread and find your responses very helpful. I leave for Egypt in March and will arrive in Cairo. I know that I must bring $25 for the visa. What is the procedure for obtaining it? I assume it is purchased at customs.
