Mens' attire at ballet in St. Petersburg

My husband and I are going on the Royalty, Revolution etc trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow in September.  Our information packet suggests the men wear a suit or sport coat to the ballet.  This would obviously complicate packing for this trip.  Has anyone been on this trip or to the ballet in
St. Petersburg that could advise?  I would think nice shirt and slacks and possibly a tie should suffice.

I just returned from Russia and attended ballet in St. Petersburg; men were wearing everything from suites to shorts. Shirt and tie should be fine. Paula

May I assume the same applies to females? I'm hoping not to pack dressy clothes! Thinking nice slacks and blouse, jacket?

I'm wondering and worrying about the same thing! Will you be wearing formal slacks, blouse and jacket? Heels?
What about visiting the museums? Thanks for your thoughts!!

So, women don't necessarily have to wear a dress?

I took the same program last fall and loved every minute. I wore a sport coat, slacks and open shirt to the ballet - I'm a male. I recall seeing people, Russians and foreigners, dressed in everything from high end formal wear to something just less than what I was wearing. I don't recall shorts or jeans. If you've never been, ballet in Russia is a big deal, the performance is wonderful and the knowledgeable Russians take it seriously. When I travel to another country, especially to a non-western country, I'm very aware that I'm an American and I'm on display as an ambassador for my country. I think shorts, jeans, anything too casual could be considered rude. You may not want to be, but you ARE on display. All that aside, enjoy your trip. I found St. Petersburg and Moscow (and the high speed train trip) to be real eye openers. These are sophisticated cities with culture, class, proud people and a history much older than ours.

This is very thoughtful and helpful, especially the point about avoiding rudeness! Would you consider a nice top and dressy slacks that would not be out of place at the Minnesota Orchestra appropriate for women at the ballet? Heels needed? Also, for visiting the Hermitage, cathedrals, etc., should we plan on "business casual" and avoid T-shirts?

I am the original questioner on this string. My husband and I leave on this trip on this Friday, the 15th. We decided based on your kind responses to take: for him, nice slacks, shirt and tie; for me, long packable black skirt and blouse, dressy flats, warm shawl.
