Local Currency Needs in Russia

I'm taking the Trans-Siberian Railway from Beijing to Moscow, with an extension to St. Petersburg. Does anyone have insights about to what extent I should be able to use my credit card, and how much local currency (rubles for Russia, renmimbis for China) I should take with me?

    In Petersburg credit card worked for me just fine. I walked but cc was accepted every where. Probably need cash for taxi, metro. For peace of mind I would carry $100.00 in Rubles obtained from auto teller which are all over . I have been to Petersburg twice and I'm going in July. It is incredible. To enjoy it more read Robert Massie. It is somewhat fantasy ala Disneyland but it is unforgettable. Donald
