Southern Africa Safari and Train Adventure: From Cape Town to Victoria Falls

Thread for this trip, specifically: https://www.roadscholar.org/find-an-adventure/21423/southern-africa-safari-and-train-adventure-from-cape-town-to-victoria-falls.

I thought a dedicated thread for this unique win-train-safari trip would let people focus on information specific to this trip.  We, along with friends, will be on the Sep 20- Oct 5, 2019 departure.

  • Hello My husband and I will be on the Jan. 11 trip--coming up soon! Another couple will also be on that trip. Any advice from previous travelers? Would be interested to know of others on our itinerary. Thanks! Virginia Collings (Ohio)
  • Hi Scott & Judy (and Ron and Joe): My wife Mary and I along with my sister (Mary) and her husband (Kevin) will also be on the September 20 departure. Mary and I live in Naples Florida during the winter and South Yarmouth In Cape Cod MA in the summer. We are retired. Mary was a teacher and I was a lawyer. We traveled with RS last year and enjoyed it. We are flying out of Boston and look forward to meeting you. Kris

We just returned from this trip. Be aware that you will be on the tour of the Shongolo Express using their bus and that their tour guide is in charge. We found it frustrating to be in a group of 44 people when the RS group was 18 and that our guide did not have control of stops, etc. The RS guide-Keith- was amazing and he has incredible knowledge! The Shongolo Express guide was boring and unfortunately we had to listen to him every time we got on the bus to go anywhere. Africa was incredible and we loved the game drives and seeing all of the animals!

I assume you meant the Rovos Rail guide? The Shongololo Express is operated by Rovos Rail, but is a different train.
The math told us we wouldn't be the sole group on the Rovos train. If that's what you were commenting on, I hope we have a different train tour guide. But, that'll only be for the couple of days of side trips from the train.
