Phoenix or Sedona?

I am planning on adding several days to front end of trip.  Trip will start in Phoenix, with a brief stop in Sedona.

Looking for suggestions as to where to book hotel.  Either Phoenix or Sedona.  Any fun hotels in either?

I want to spend some time in Sedona poking thru the galleries and see Jerome.  I will be traveling solo; no car.

Is it better to do day trips from Phoenix or shuttle to Sedona and then back to Phoenix.

Looking forward to all suggestions.

  • Didn't think I'd ever offer advice to you, CT_PBW, since you've been around the block a few times. So, if your trip
involves Sedona anyway, then I'd say stay there. Sedona will not disappoint. I live in a NW suburb of Phoenix and have
visited Sedona many times, but only stayed overnight (weekends) on 2 occasions at 2 different hotels. For jaw-dropping views, there are a bunch of high-end hotels, but the only one I've stayed in is L'Auberge de Sedona, a bit pricey but wonderful
amenities and REALLY good restaurant. The other hotel I took lodging in one weekend is El Portal, 'rustic' in the finest and
let's say least economic sense of that word. I can recommend them, and both are right in downtown Sedona, but seriously,
I doubt you can find a bad hotel in the town.

Phoenix also has many fine/fun hotels downtown (e.g. Kimpton Hotels) and many good choices eastward on Camelback
Road in Scottsdale and environs. Bring money, but they really are worth it if your budget allows. If your trip will not stray
too far fromPhoenix, then by all means stay there and take the 2.5 hour drive north to Sedona for a day trip, stay overnight
in Jerome at The Hotel Grand (it's haunted of course). We could meet for a beer if you like, depending when your trip is.
