Best of San Francisco

We will have one and half days in September to see the best of San Francisco before we start on our Road Scholar tour of the California National Parks Medley.  There are many options for tours, but it's hard to tell which ones are the most enjoyable.  Experiences of others would be most welcome.

  • We'll be on this trip with on Sept. 19. We're staying 2 extra days after the trip. Don't miss Alcatraz Island. You can't see this anywhere else!
  • Look for a hop on/hop off tour so you don't spend all your time figuring out transportation.
Golden Gate Park, cable car ride up Nob Hill, Top of the Mark for sunset cocktails, Slanted Door for lunch at the Ferry Building, Painted Ladies, Beach Blanket Babylon(musical revue),Haight Ashbury (daytime only),Telegraph Hill, Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf.
If walkers there is a book of walking the stairs in San Francisco which takes you to some interesting places.
Check this website www.frommers.com/.../san-francisco I have never been steered wrong on this site.
  • I live in the Bay Area and would suggest you visit Pier 39. Lots of shopping, street musicians, bicycle taxis, souvenirs! Sometimes I take a train to the city to visit with former employee friends, and I never get tired of this city. Lots to see and do! Oh, and don’t forget to take a cable car. They’re close to Giaradelli Square!
  • We really enjoyed riding on top of the Big Bus. Great overview of the city in a couple hours. Worth it.
