getting input on seasonal temperatures

Hi -- For folks who may have already travelled to South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, etc.) -- I was wondering if you could chat about when you went and what the general weather/temperatures were like.  Am trying to decide on trip dates and would like to get some input.  Thanks.

  • I went late August/Early September. It was warmer than even I expected 85/60 and luckily I had packed accordingly. I tend to wear shorts well into September in New England if that gives you an idea. A light windbreaker was the most I would wear. It seemed than most of the women wore capris and light sweaters. Gentlemen wore shorts/jeans and polos with windbreakers. If you are starting in Rapid City go a day or two early. A very interesting city. Look for the trolley tour that stops running 8/31. A great way to see Rapid City and Stavkirke was amazing. The Journey Museum, if not part of your trip is also a great way to be introduced to South Dakota. Lots of fun stores, restaurants and small galleries in the city. I stayed at the Hilton/Alex Johnson downtown before meeting with the group. Keep checking the price and become a Hilton member, you get some extras that way. The price was great, the hotel historic and centrally located.
