Cycling in the Black Hills

How difficult is the cycling in the Black Hills?

  • I did it as my first ever bike trip. If you are in good aerobic shape and can ride 44 miles in a day on crushed limestone and gravel you should be fine. There are some long uphills (6 plus miles at a time, but the grade is not steep- listed as 4%, so you do need to be able to handle softer terrain and possible wind, which can be in your face. Of course you can skip a day, or ride part of the day in the support van too. The folks at the Lutheran Outlaw Ranch do a wonderful job of taking care of the riders. Suggest you give them a call to discuss trip. RS staff doesn't really know trip specifics.
