Single room vs. Roommate

As a solo traveler, do you prefer a single room or ask to be paired with a roommate? Why?

    In reply to sandyoung030614:

One my previous two RS trips I signed up for a double but both times had a room to myself. However, after speaking with some singles in our group who were assigned room mates that truly weren't compatible, I decided to go single room for my upcoming trip.

I have been on 58 Elderhostel/Road Scholar trips. I would request a roommate. Many times I had the room to myself when I was not assigned a roommate. Then I had a roommate that assumed I was her companion both during the program as well free time. I had a roommate that ruined my entire trip. She talked constantly on the cell phone. I had a few roommates that were just unacceptable. I started going on long trips with RS. I would get a single room. So I started getting a single room all the time. I try not to think about the extra cost and grit my teeth and pay it. The peaceful solitude is worth it!

I'm reliably informed that I snore, so as a courtesy to my hypothetical roommate, I opt for a single room whenever possible.

I have shared rooms with friends on choir trips, etc. which can be difficult and can't imagine trying to get along with a stranger. I have lived alone most of my life and like things to be my way. Don't mind the extra expense for my privacy. From what I have read about Road Scholar the "single supplement" is very reasonable compared with most Cruise companies where a single basically pays the same as a couple.
