Just found out that RS has changed its policy for travelers arranging their own flights. It used to be that if you could arrive in time, you could join the group transport from the airport. Information on the website stated the time by which you'd need to arrive. If your flights got delayed, though, you were on your own to get to where you needed to be.
The new RS policy is that unless you buy your flights through them, you can't use their transport. Now the group transport time is a secret. On at least some trips you may be able to reserve a seat on the transport for a price, but they won't tell you what time the transport will be leaving the airport until 4-5 weeks before your departure -- too late for most people to reasonably be able to get (or change) their tickets.
In my case, I was hoping to use points for my flights. Already spending thousands on the program itself, I'd like to save some money on my travel. Apparently to do that, I'll have to take my chances that I'll pick an arrival time that allows me to (pay extra) to be transported with the group. Or, on my own, take three trains to get to our destination. I wish RS would be a little compassionate and help me out here. For sure I can't wait until 4-5 weeks before the trip to try to score a ticket with points.
This strikes me as a very unfortunate decision on the part of RS, to exclude travelers who arrange their own flights (for whatever reason) to forego use of group transport.
What do you think?
