Credit or Refund?

grahamcc5101828

I got a letter than my trip was cancelled and it said credit.  Is there a way to actually get a refund?   I've never traveled with RS before and I can't seem to find this info on their website.

It also said that if your trip is cancelled you get the insurance fee back which was $100 when I purchased it.

I just find it difficult to maneuver their website and get these answers.

Thanks veteran travelers with RS in advance.

AND stay safe out there.

Wondering the same thing, since it seems pretty likely my trip to France in May will be cancelled. Hoping for refund rather than a credit. Note that RS states (www.roadscholar.org/.../):

"If Road Scholar cancels my program prior to the start date, is the cost of the Trip Protection Plan refundable?

    Yes ....."

However, I can't find an answer to your question, which I think applies to the total cost, not just the insurance component.

It is really best to call them and they don't mind. RS's website is not the best but their programs are. I am sorry that your first trip with RS was cancelled. Try another one for later in the year or even perhaps next year.

    Cathy,
The RS website can be difficult to maneuver and at times gives conflicting information (as pointed out on another thread previously regarding whether insurance covers privately purchased airfare).

For your questions, here is what the RS website says:

"What happens if Road Scholar cancels a program?

Very rarely, we may need to cancel your program. If we do, we’ll notify you as far in advance as possible, and you’ll get a complete refund on the cost of your program or you can transfer your money to another program. If there are penalties for canceling or changing transportation arrangements, we’ll help defray those costs by giving you a Road Scholar voucher, which you can use toward the cost of your next Road Scholar program."

I found this on the website by going to Practical Considerations on the red bar, then selecting Money Matters on the side bar. Scroll down for the verbiage about cancelled programs.

Here is what I found about the refund of insurance for a cancelled program:

"If Road Scholar cancels my program prior to the start date, is the cost of the Trip Protection Plan refundable?

Yes. Although the plan is otherwise non-refundable after 10 days from purchase, on the rare occasion when Road Scholar must cancel a program your trip protection plan will be canceled and automatically refunded in full. Because all trip protection plans are immediately canceled as soon as Road Scholar cancels the program, participants may not file a claim for any expenses due to Road Scholar’s cancellation of the program."

I found this at this page, scroll down and click on the FAQ.

I know their office is busy as can be BUT I'd call to discuss. I'd have the links up so you can read the page to the RS staffer you talk to. If you need to, ask for a supervisor. Let us know how you do.

I've enjoyed all my 11 Road Scholar programs. The instructors have been wonderful and I've learned a lot. I hope you'll consider traveling with them again after this mess is over if they give you a satisfactory resolution.

    ~Pam

Thank you Pam. I hope RS survives this economic armaggeon - the financial stress on them must be tremendous. Lee

Thanks for all they great advice.

I had to call to get a refund - can't be done via email. They were super nice about it. Insurance will be credited in about 4 weeks since it's with an outside carrier not RS.

Cathy, that is excellent to hear! AND to know you have to call for the refund instead of it being done by email. Good information for others who are facing the same predicament.

Now, time to look at the catalog and decide if you are going to take the same trip or another one, lol!

Just did the refund of the entire amount via phone this morning. No problem. Guy was very nice. He said the RS has been around since 1975 and has weathered lots of storms and expects to be around a lot longer. Refund should show up in an email in 48 hours, although he did say it could take a bit longer, given the number of transactions being processed. No specific idea of when it would hit my credit card as a refund.
    Steve

    ====================

Update 3/26: Part of the refund covering the cruise itself was issued 3/23 (3 days after request) and credited by American Express the next day. The second part of the refund, covering airfare (we had done a different flight day and time) was issued today, 3/26 (6 days after initial request). Still waiting for part II to hit AX.

So I think things are going along well.

I contacted RS in early March before I made the payment for my May trip to inquire about what happens to my money if the trip was cancelled. I was told that I would receive a refund unless I wanted to apply the fee to another trip in the future. Let's hope that the individual was giving me the correct info. I charged my fee on a credit card, so I plan to file a dispute claim with my credit card company to be sure the charge doesn't go through.
