Cancellation of June trips

I have reservations to take my 16 year old granddaughter to Paris in June. This is my first experience with Road Scholar, having heard only great things. I have been extremely disappointed with the way the potential cancellation of trips has been handled. I have made 4 phone calls to their office and, with each representative, have received a different answer. I was even told by one that they “would really like it if I paid my balance because the company needs the money”! What? Is it all about them? Last week I was told I would be receiving an email this week with the decision about June trips. Nothing! This experience leads me to question my decision about going on the trip....whenever it may be. Thoughts?

It's hard to judge any company in this unusual circumstance. I had programs canceled in the past and also due to COVID-19. All I can say is having a vacation canceled is not the worst thing in the world.

I have rebooked for 3/2021 and have a trip booked for 10/2020. If RS cancels I will deal with that when it comes along. If not, I always buy AON insurance so I have options.

If you buy the AON insurance you can cancel for any reason pretty close to the date of your program. You get a program credit, airfare is not covered and you don't get a refund of your insurance. You have to file a claim with AON.

If you wait until RS cancels a program you get a refund of program and insurance, airfare is covered. You do NOT have to file a claim with AON.

RS has always been good to me on going thru the cancellation process. I hope this helps. Check out the Practical Information link for more detailed information.

I can sympathize! I also have a trip scheduled for early June when I planned to have lunch with my 85-year-old cousin in Cambridge, Massachusetts -- who tells me that life for him is dwindling -- and then join the RS program in Plymouth, Massachusetts, for the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower and the town of Plymouth. I can really sympathize with your situation. I also have pre-paid lodging reservations for my trip from and back to the Washington DC area and the RS program. I had planned to drive. But Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization, and not a for-profit company like American Airlines and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse that are receiving billions of dollars in our tax-dollar bailout funds now. Even with that, my friend Rebecca had to cancel a flight to DC from Ohio earlier this month, and the airline would not refund the cost of her flight and only offered her a credit for a future flight. Corporate tour companies like Rick Steves Travel, for example, make money not only on their tours, but also on their brand sales. I'm sure the nonprofit Road Scholar is trying to keep as many of their staff on payroll while they can, and it must be stressful for staff handling phone calls. For me, being patient with non profits and small businesses and struggling arts organizations now, is part of my contribution to the greater good, though I know that is not possible for everyone. If I were rich, or even just comfortable financially, I would give Road Scholar many of my millions! For now, all I can offer them is patience and a belief that they will survive in the coming years.

We know that you are looking ahead to the possible suspension of your program. Please know that we are looking ahead too, and will provide answers as soon as we can. When we have news to share, we will contact you immediately. We are sorry that this process is taking more time than you were led to believe and we appreciate your understanding and patience during this challenging time. Best, Rachel
