Carry on Luggage only versus checking bag

Going on my first RS trip to Italy in October and trying to decide on only taking a carry on bag (advice of my children) versus checking a bag, which might make packing a little easier.  Has anyone had issues with checking luggage going overseas?

I went on the E. Europe trip from Denver to Munich to Prague . Somewhere along the line TSA lock was destroyed as well as a zipper pull. But TSA is a US thing. That was the only problem. In all my overseas travels I've never had a problem. Being on a ship the bag stayed on ship. I have always taken a checked on bag for any trip overseas, as well as a very small carry on for meds, a book, a few small pieces of clothing, etc. Now if you're going to a warm climate that's different, but some programs you may need light clothing, as well as warmer layered clothing.
