Carry on Luggage only versus checking bag

Going on my first RS trip to Italy in October and trying to decide on only taking a carry on bag (advice of my children) versus checking a bag, which might make packing a little easier.  Has anyone had issues with checking luggage going overseas?

Every airline is different and they change frequently. This site is close but best to go to airline site for current data travel-made-simple.com/.../. Also first class is normally different is size and weight so another thing to consider. Sometimes, albeit rarely, first class airfare is cheaper in the long run than paying for baggage fees, meals and drinks.

This site gives good information travel-made-simple.com/.../. But always best to go to airline site directly. Rarely, but it does happen, I get a first class airfare that is not much more than coach and it pays for itself in meals, luggage fees and drinks. Not to mention if you have an airline card it can give you extended amenities.
