Would you recommend purchasing a trip protection plan? Has it ever come to the rescue for you during a program?

First of all, not all Medicare policies are the same. I have a Medicare Advantage policy that covers emergency care worldwide, so check your policy carefully for that. For cancellation I am covered by…

I will be the contrarian. My wife and I have been on 9 RS trips and several others with other companies. We never pay for insurance. The total amount that we have saved would pay for a trip, so if we do have some expenses due to unforeseen circumstances in the future, we will still be ahead.

Our travel credit card (Chase Saphire Reserve) covers trip interruption/cancellation, lost luggage, accidental death and dismemberment, emergency medical and evacuation. Our previous card, United Explorer, had many of the same benefits.

Also, while it is true that Medicare doesn't cover out of country, my medicare supplement does cover it. So paying for the RS insurance would be double coverage for us.

I would suggest that you check your credit card benefits to see if any of these benefits are included with your card.

Thank you for the heads up re: the Chase card which we have. With the change in RS insurance I was looking for alternate ways to insure, checked out the details of the Chase card and it looks like pretty good coverage.

Agree on the credit card travel protection. More than adequate in most instances for the $89/year they charge. As long as you use a good card, you're covered.

Could you please elaborate on the benefits with Chase? Is there a charge? With my Citibank visa there’s a $3k limit but that’s dropping to $1500 as of July 29. There’s no cost for it.

I don't know about all these different plans/benefits. My advice is to read your policy carefully and decide what you need or want.

I never purchase insurance but put the trip on my chase card. Chase covers trip insurance. My Medicare supplement also pays for medical expenses out of the country

I would suggest not depending on your credit card coverage for trip insurance. My husband and I had the United Explorer card and were insured we would be covered...but they have so many exceptions. My husband found out a week before a trip to Barcelona that he had pancreatic cancer. We canceled the trip and within a week he was in the hospital very ill. Thank god we didn’t go. Tried to file a claim but they said we could rebook the trip within a year and the airline would let us change our tickets. I told them my husband is starting on chemo and his prognosis poor. I told them he will die before he can take a European vacation. He is terminal. He passed away in eight months and we never got paid a dime.

ALWAYS check current credit card medical/travel terms . I recently received notification on credit card that no longer covers medical/travel. They did give a few months notification; something to consider when pondering coverage.

@tigeythecat - I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. Pancreatic cancer is particularly nasty and so difficult for patient and family.
