Would you recommend purchasing a trip protection plan? Has it ever come to the rescue for you during a program?

First of all, not all Medicare policies are the same. I have a Medicare Advantage policy that covers emergency care worldwide, so check your policy carefully for that. For cancellation I am covered by my credit card, United Explorer Visa, as long as I use that card to pay for my trip. Previous to having that card I always used insuremytrip.com. As for RS insurance being expensive, I think that is because RS, as well as other tour companies, only offer a higher-cost policy that includes coverage for pre-existing conditions. If you do not have a pre-existing condition then a basic policy through insuremytrip.com is sufficient, and much less expensive. Finally, to the traveler who had to pay 110 euro for medical care in Europe, if you are not reimbursed by Medicare at least you can gain comfort from the fact that medical care in Europe is so much more affordable than in the US.
